Before the season started it was said that Arsenal were too lightweight to be a force this season and that Arsene Wenger hadnt spent enough on new signings. Well after the 6-1 thumping of Everton, certain people might want to rethink their comments !
Goals from Denilson, new signing Vermaelen and William Gallas meant the game was all over as a contest by half time, two more from Cesc Fabregas and another from Eduardo before Louis Saha got a very late consolation gave David Moyes’ Everton a horrible home start to the season. On the bright side, things can only get better for Everton, or at least Moyes is hoping so !
I wonder if this was a cunning plan by David Moyes to put Manchester City off Jolean Lescott ??
In the days other games, Aston Villa drew a blank, going down 2-0 at home to Wigan. Moneybags Manchester City beat Blackburn 2-0 with ‘home grown’ Steven Ireland getting the second.
Chelsea grabbed a late winner at home to a plucky Hull side that had taken a surprise lead. Didier Drogba grabbed both goals for Chelsea even though the winner was probably a cross !
Portsmouth dont look happy this season and went down 1-0 at home to Fulham, while Sunderland grabbed a 1-0 win away at Bolton.
Newcomers Wolves and Burnley were welcomed to the Premier League by West Ham and stoke and both went down 2-0
The other 2 of the ‘big 4′ are in action later so it remains to be seen if they can match the gunners great start
Odds on Sir Alex having a moan anyone ?
Crystal Palace boss Neil Warnock was not a happy man yesterday (is he ever ?) after seeing a good goal from Freddy Sears disallowed when the only people in the ground who didnt see the ball go in the net, hit the back of the net and bounce out were the referee and his assistant.
To add insult to injury, Nicky Maynard won the game for Bristol City in the last minute leaving Mr Warnock fuming (as usual)
Warnock said, “We can put a man on the moon, time serves of 100 miles per hour at Wimbledon, yet we cannot place a couple of sensors in a net to show when a goal has been scored.”
“I thought Gary Johnson and his players could have shown more sportsmanship because they knew it was a goal, like everyone else. But I’m 60 years old and maybe I expect too much.”
“I have a transfer embargo on me and a group of young players working their socks off for the club. They didn’t deserve that today.”
“We were cheated”
Never mind eh Mr Warnock
It was almost the same old England last night as mistakes by ‘experienced’ internationals Rio Ferdinand and Gareth Barry gifted the Netherlands a two goal half time lead in the Amsterdam Arena which was possibly a little harsh and didnt really reflect the run of the game.
Dont know if Fabio Capello gave them the ‘hair dryer treatment’ at half time but it was all change after the break. Substitute Jermaine Defoe scored minutes into the second half and then again with thirteen minutes left to gain a creditable draw.
Low point of the game:
Not so much Ferdinand’s sloppy back pass, but the way he then stood and watched as Green and Terry tried to get him out of trouble.
High points of the game:
Impressive cameo appearances of Carlton Cole and James Milner (and of course Defoe’s brace)
Need to improve and cut out these mistakes if we are going to get anywhere in South Africa but at least we showed the spirit to fight back.
Oh and I’m in the dog house as my son didnt see the game and this morning my daughter ‘accidently’ deleted it from the Sky+ Not sure how thats my fault but hey ho !
3 days to go til the start of the new Premier League season so I guess it’s time for some predictions
Chelsea v Hull City 2-0
Cant see Phil Brown getting anything out of this. Carlo Ancelloti’s Chelsea should just be too strong.
Aston Villa v Wigan Athletic 1-0
Slight advantage to ‘Barry-less’ Villa here
Blackburn v Manchester City 1-2
Not sure if City’s ‘galacticos’ will blend quickly enough but they still should have enough to beat Blackburn
Bolton v Sunderland 1-0
Home advantage should just about be enoughdor Bolton to take the points
Portsmouth v Fulham 0-0
Fulham’s usual away form wont be enough to get a win and Portsmouth dont look like getting anything, so a 0-0 bore draw
Stoke City v Burnley 1-0
Not much in it, but nothing for the newcomers
Wolves v West Ham Utd 1-1
Think both teams will cancel themselves out here, but Wolves will get a sneaky last minute equaliser!
Everton v Arsenal 1-2
Arsenal should just have the edge in what should be a close game
Man Utd v Birmingham 3-1
Only one winner here
Tottenham v Liverpool 1-1
Hardest one of the lot to predict, could go either way but I’m hedging my bets and going for a draw !
We’ll see how close I was in a couple of days
