World CupTuesday 29th June – Day 19
The first shootout

Paraguay 0 Japan 0 Paraguay win 5-3 on penalties

With both sides looking to reach the quarterfinals for the first time in their history, Paraguay won the first penalty shoot-out of thisWorld Cup scoring all five of their penalties after a disappointing match had finished 0-0 at the end of extra-time.

Spain 1 Portugal 0

European champions Spain moved into the quarter-finals of the World Cup thanks to a David Villa’s fourth goal of the tournament. Spain’s slick brand of passing football was very effective leaving Portugal chasing the ball for the majority of the game.
Portugal’s Ricardo Costa sent off for an off-the-ball clash with Joan Capdevila but by then, victory was already Spain’s.

So now we know all 8 teams making up the quarter finals and their ate some really mouth watering matchups:

Holland v Brazil
Uruguay v Ghana
Argentina v Germany
Paraguay v Spain

World Cup 2010 Day Eighteen

World CupMonday 28th June – Day 18
The favourites are through

Holland 2 Slovakia 1
A great goal from Arjen Robben and a late Wesley Sneijder second gave Holland a deserved win over Slovakia and reach the quarter-finals.
In his first start of the competition, Robben fired in a superb low drive from 25 yards. Sneijder sealed the game for the Dutch and then Robert Vittek scored a consolation penalty for Slovakia with the very last kick of the game.

Brazil 3 Chile 0
Brazil strolled past a disappointing Chile to set up a quarter-final match against Holland. Juan scored first with a powerful header, Luis Fabiano slotted into an empty net for the second and then Robinho got his first goal of the tournament from the edge of the area.

Got a feeling its all set up for an Argentina v Brazil final, how good would that be!!

World CupSunday 27th June – Day 17
What a load of….

England 1 Germany 4
I dont know why I’m surprised really, after all, I’ve been watching football for too many years to believe the hype around the England team, but for some reason, this time I really thought we had a chance.
As usual, England proved me wrong with an astounding display of comedy defending that a schoolboy team would have been ashamed of.
No doubt, all the talking will be about Lampard’s disallowed ‘goal’ but in reality we just werent good enough to beat a confident and organised German team.

And you seriously have to question a manager who, when the team is chasing the game and desperately need goals, decides to bring on the ultimate goal machine that is Emile Heskey…

Another 4 years of hurt

Argentina 3 Mexico 1
Argentina showed how it should be done as they cruised past Mexico to set up a quarter-final tie against Germany, but they were aided by yet another terrible decision on a day of controversy.

Just as Frank Lampard’s shot that clearly crossed the goal-line was not awarded in their match against Germany, so Mexico had the right to feel upset by another example of awful officiating as Carlos Tevez scored the opener despite being yards offside, a fact which was borne out by a reply shown on the giant screen straight after.

A mistake then gifted Higuain a goal, before Tevez got his second with a stunning effort into the top corner. Mexico clawed one back in the second half, but Argentina always looked in control.

Surprisingly, despite the controversies in both games, there were no red cards today!

It really is about time Sepp Blatter got his act together and joined the real world and agreed that video technology can be used…

World Cup 2010 Day Sixteen

Into the last sixteen…

Uruguay 2 South Korea 1
Luis Suarez scored a spectacular winner that earn Uruguay a place in the quarters-finals at the expense of South Korea. The South Koreans, who reached the semi-finals in 2002, were sparkling in attack but very shakey in defence, and that was exposed in the eighth minute when Suarez tapped home an easy opener. Bolton’s Lee Chung-Yong headed in from eight yards on 68 minutes to give the Koreans hope and that was the first goal Uruguay had conceded in the tournament so far. With 10 minutes left Suarez curled in an excellent strike which clipped the post on the way in to send the twice winners through to the last eight for the first time since 1970.

USA 1 Ghana 2 (AET)
Ghana became only the third African side to reach the quarter-final stage at a World Cup after Asamoah Gyan smashed home an extra-time winner to knock out the USA who had equalised through a Landon Donovan penalty in the second half.
The Black Stars, the only remaining African team in the tournament will play Uruguay in the quarter finals.

No red cards today !

The Last Sixteen

World CupFriday 25th June – Day 15
So now we know who the last 16 are, and there’s a couple of mouth watering matches to look out for, as some old enemies meet up.

Firstly England meet Germany and what needs to be said about that meeting? Lets hope there’s a replay of the fine 5-1 win in Munich back in 2001

And then there’s the meeting between neighbours Portugal and Spain, both sides full of class and so looks like being a very entertaining game
