Brazil and Portugal played out an uneventful and unentertaining goalless draw which means both qualify for the last 16. Would have thought that 2 teams of this calibre could have done a lot more to keep the fas happy

The Ivory Coast needed a miracle to qualify for the last 16, but despite a comfortable win over North Korea they were eliminated. They needed to overcome a huge goal deficit and hope that Portugal lost to Brazil. In the end, neither happened.

Needing a two-goal win to get a place in the last 16, Switzerland lacked a cutting edge and were unable to break down a stubborn Honduran side, who wasted several chances to sneak a victory on the break in a hectic finale to the game.

Spain’s class was enough to get them past a hard working, talented but ill-disciplined Chile team who deservedly joined the European champions in qualifying for the knockout stages. Chile put Spain under real pressure before being reduced to 10 men with a controversial 2nd yellow card for Estrada.
Goals from David Villa and Andres Iniesta sealed the win for Spain who ended up as group winners despite losing their first game

Paraguay booked their place in the knockout round after an uneventful draw against New Zealand ensured they finished top of Group F. Before the game the All Whites still had a chance of qualifying but blew their chances by not getting a single shot on target

Reigning champions Italy were amazingly knocked out of the World Cup by Slovakia. In what was probably the best game of the tournament so far, Robert Vittek scored a goal in each half to end the Azzurri’s dreams of defending the trophy they won in Germany.
The 2010 World Cup will be remembered as a disaster for Italy, who finished bottom group F and failed to qualify from the group stages for the first time since 1974.

Two stunning first-half free-kicks helped Japan secure a deserved win over Denmark and a meeting with Paraguay in the last 16. Keisuke Honda smashed his shot into the far corner before Yasuhito Endo, curled a fine strike around the wall.
Jon Dahl Tomasson followed up his own penalty to pull one back for Denmark, but Shinji Okazaki sealed a famous victory for Japan.

A late Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s goal amde sure Holland moved into the last sixteen unbeaten. The Dutch had a harder job than they expected against a spirited Cameroon side, who were already eliminated after losing their first two matches.

No red cards today!!!

Well its not an unlucky thirteen for England as the boys finally look as if they are starting to get their act together and playing like a team who actually believe in themselves. Jermaine Defoe got the winner in the first half, but for long periods of the game there was only one team in it. Not sure why JT was doing the worm though…

A dramatic stoppage-time goal from Landon Donovan secured a narrow victory over Algeria and fired the United States into the last 16 of the World Cup as group winners. The goal also meant that Slovenia dipped out

Australia’s good second-half display against Serbia wasn’t quite enough for the Socceroos to sensationally claim a place in the round of 16. A header from Tim Cahill header and a long-range strike from substitute Brett Holman meant that at one point they were only two goals away from snatching second place in Group D. But it was Ghana but who go through to the 2nd round on superior goal difference.

Germany’s 1-0 win over Ghana has set up a last 16 meeting with England. Mesut Ozil’s stunning strike was enough to earn victory over Ghana, who also qualified from Group D on goal difference

A Luis Suarez header saw Uruguay take the top spot in Group A, but opponents Mexico also qualified for the last 16 despite their defeat.
The result meant that South Africa’s 2-1 victory over France was not enough for the hosts as Mexico went through on goal difference, while unbeaten Uruguay finished top of the group with seven points and still without concedeing a goal

South Africa become the first host nation to fail to reach the second round of the tournament but they ended their campaign on a high, beating France 2-1. The French never looked like getting anything from the game and this has gone down as probably one of their most shambolic ever.

Argentina took a while to get past a stubborn Greece side which never looked like they wanted anything other than a draw until they finally went behind. Lionel Messi was man marked almost out of the game but still came up with a couple of moments of brilliance, but it was defender Demechelis who broke the deadlock and 36 year old Martin Palermo got the 2nd after Messi’s shot hit the post.

South Korea’s hard-fought draw with Nigeria was enough to secure second place in Group B; The Asian side had never been past the opening stage of a World Cup held outside of their own country and were made to fight to the last minute the result that put them through

And yes there was another red card!

Group AB

South Korea will face Uruguay in the last 16 of the World Cup after a hard-fought draw with Nigeria was enough to secure second place in Group B.

The Asian side have never been past the opening stage of a World Cup held outside of their own country and were made to fight to the last minute for the point which put them through after Greece were beaten 2-0 by Argentina.

2 games have been played in each group of the 2010 World Cup, so I was wondering if the group stages was only 2 games – who would play who in the 1st knock out round

Well wonder no more!

If the groups ended now, this is what the knock out stage would look like:

Uruguay v South Korea
Slovenia v Germany
Ghana v USA
Argentina v Mexico
Holland v Italy
Brazil v Spain
Paraguay v Japan
Chile v Portugal

Yep, no France, no South Africa, no Ivory Coast and worst of all – No England!!!

Thankfully there’s still one game left
