England national team boss Fabio Capello has apologised for his side’s dismal performances at the World Cup finals in South Africa.

The Italian was speaking ahead of a Wembley friendly against Hungary, having been backed to continue in his role for at least another two years.

Capello commented: “First of all, I say sorry to the fans that joined us in South Africa. I know they spent a lot of time and money following England and I’m really sorry.

“But we have to look forward now for the European qualification matches.

“It has not been good period for me. When you win, you are the best. When you lose, you are nothing.

“We have to understand this job will always be like that.

“I preferred to stay, but, if the FA had decided to sack me. I would have understood it.”
