Jamie Redknapp has lauded Paul Scholes as the best English midfielder the Premier League has ever seen, after the Manchester United veteran inspired Sir Alex Ferguson’s side to a 3-0 win over Newcastle United.
While many will perhaps point to the goals and industry of Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard or perhaps argue Chelsea talisman Frank Lampard’s ability to consistently net 20 goals a season, Redknapp believes the 35-year-old Old Trafford veteran is the best English midfielder to have graced the Premier League.
Redknapp suggests Scholes’ vision and his ability to pass both short and long sets him apart from his more prolific peers, and claims all of his unique artistry was on show against Newcastle United last night.
Redknapp told Skysports.com: “Paul Scholes was just imperious against Newcastle, absolutely imperious.
“People are talking about a transitional year for United but it just goes to show, there is no substitute for experience – or quality.
“I’ll admit Newcastle gave him more room than he’ll get if he plays this weekend, but the way he just plays the game at his own pace is a joy to watch.
“You can count on one hand the amount of times he gives the ball away, he always has a picture in his mind where he wants the ball to go and I can pay him no higher compliment than he is the best English midfielder we’ve seen since the Premier League began.
“I still remember seeing him do things in England training sessions that made you realise this is a lad with everything in his locker.
“That pass to Ryan Giggs for the third goal was meant to be volleyed in, Scholes knew where he wanted to put it and he knows that Ryan can put them away.”
