If it ended now..

2 games have been played in each group of the 2010 World Cup, so I was wondering if the group stages was only 2 games – who would play who in the 1st knock out round

Well wonder no more!

If the groups ended now, this is what the knock out stage would look like:

Uruguay v South Korea
Slovenia v Germany
Ghana v USA
Argentina v Mexico
Holland v Italy
Brazil v Spain
Paraguay v Japan
Chile v Portugal

Yep, no France, no South Africa, no Ivory Coast and worst of all – No England!!!

Thankfully there’s still one game left

World Cup 2010 Day Seven Results

World Cup 2010 Day Six Results

World CupThursday 17th June – Day 7

Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain scores a hat-trick as Argentina see off South Korea to all but book their place in the  2nd Round

Greece finally managed to score their first ever World Cup goal and then got in the swing of things and got a second as they come from behind against to win over Nigeria and they will still have hope of getting through the group stage

France have forgotten where the goal is and it looks like they may be heading home after Mexico make them suffer with a deserved 2-0 win. All it would need would be for Mexico and Uruguay to play out a draw and the French would be on the next plane home.. They’ll be celebrating the in streets of Dublin if that happens!

Oh and before I forget…. yet another red card!

Next week we’ll have a look at the teams in Group C

Can England win the World Cup?

Now the draw for the group stages of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and we know that England will face the USA, Algeria and Slovenia, it might well be a good time to have a look at the possible routes that England will take if they are going to win the World Cup.

If England win Group C, they will play the runners up in Group D, probably Ghana in the 1st round of the knockout stages..

If England progress, they will most likely play France in quarter final..

A win in the quarter final means England will probably face Brazil in the semi final…

Another win would mean a first World Cup final appearance for England since 1966, probably against either Argentina, Italy, Germany or Spain…

But should England only finish as Runners up in Group C, the job would perhaps be a bit harder…

Probably Germany in the 1st Knockout round…

Probably Argentina in the Quarter finals…

Probably Spain or Italy in the Semi finals…

And then probably Brazil in the final…

4 former World Cup winners to beat in order to lift the trophy!!

Doesnt sound too easy whichever way you look at it, but then if Capello’s men are to bring home the trophy, they need to be good enough to beat whatever team is put in front of them.

Can they do it?  Only time will tell
