The No.1 Fan

The No.1 Fan is a 25cm high plastic toy representing football fans everywhere. He may have had a few too many pies, he certainly won’t get to play professionally but be in no doubt, this little fellow will follow his team through thick and thin, rain or shine, win or lose.

In his jeans and replica shirt, the No.1 Fan swings his hips and waves his scarf when a button is pressed on his base, but that’s not all, he sings five of your favourite teams most popular terrace chants.

Arsenal No.1 FanThe Fan is an ideal gift for dads, husbands, sons or anyone who likes a laugh and a kick about. Rival fans get to wind up their mates and loyal supporters get a friend for life.

In short, it’s on sale, it’s fun, it’s £19.99 and we think you should own one.

Spurs are on their way to Wembley…. again!

Tottenham substitutes David Bentley and Roman Pavlyuchenko made instant impacts last night as Spurs came from behind to charge into an FA Cup semi-final at Wembley with a 3-1 win over Fulham. Earlier, Bobby Zamora had met Damien Duff’s pass with a placed finish to give Fulham a well deserved half-time lead.

David_BentleyThe introduction of David Bentley at half time completely changed the game, with the winger curling in a free-kick with virtually his first kick of the game and then crossing for Roman Pavlyuchenko to volley home. Eidur Gudjohnsen then rounded off a good flowing move to set up a semi final meeting with Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp’s old side Portsmouth at Wembley.

And with Aston Villa and Manchester City both dropping points in the Premier League, Tottenhams grip on 4th place was helped as well. All in all, a good night for Spurs!

There are loads of Tottenham Hotspur souvenirs and gifts available now at Footballbits Football Souvenirs, perfect for any Spurs fan to celebrate the upcoming semi final.

Celebrate 100 years of the ‘Theatre of Dreams’

This month, Old Trafford, home of Manchester United celebrates its one hundredth birthday and has an amazing history. .

In 1902 Manchester United were known as Newton Heath , newly appointed chairman John Henry Davies pushed for a new stadium to built as he believed their current stadium, Bank Street simply wasn’t good enough for a team who had won both the FA cup and First Division.

The stadium was originally planned to have a capacity of 100,000 but due to the high cost of the land, the capacity was reduced to 80,000. The FA Cup Final was hosted at Old Trafford in 1911 and 1920 the first England international was played there when Scotland visited in 1926.

Football continued at the stadium throughout the 3nd World War, until  the 22nd December 1940 when a German air raid severely damaged the stadium. Old Trafford reopened in March of 1941, but just three days later, most of the stadium was destroyed by another German air raid. During the reconstruction of Old Trafford, Manchester United actually played their home games at Maine Road, home to rivals Manchester City.

Old Trafford finally reopened in 1949 after nearly 10 years. In 1951 work began restoring roof over the main stand, followed soon after by the other 3 stands. and floodlights were installed.

In 1992 the Football League, after the Taylor report into the Hillsborogh tragedy, decreed that all First and Second Division football stadiums had to be made all-seater. Once the changes had been made, Old Trafford had dropped to an all time low capacity of 44,000 seats.

Because of United’s popularity, construction began in 1995 of a brand new twenty five thousand capacity north stand. In 2000, with continued success, second tiers were added to both the east and west stands bringing the capacity to over 68,000.

Between 2005 and 2006 second tiers were added to both the North-West and North-East corners of the ground bringing the capacity to well over 76,000 all- seated spectators.

Football’s frozen bits – Orange balls anyone?

Looks like the weather has got the better of this weekend’s football, just like it managed to stop the blogging this week..

frozen pitchHalf of the weekend’s Premier League programme succumbed to the snow yesterday amid concerns that not enough effort was being made to keep some matches on.

Fulham, Sunderland and Burnley announced that todays games have been postponed, while Liverpool, due to play Spurs tomorrow made an early application to the Premier League to call the game off.

Hull’s game with Chelsea was finally called off last night after being doubt all day.

The Premier League said: “It is unfortunate that these matches have had to be called off, however the advice from the statutory authorities in light of continuing adverse weather conditions was to postpone”
(Translation – its cold, icy and very slippery!)

So far the Premier League games still on are:
Arsenal v Everton
Birmingham City v Manchester United
Manchester City v Bolton (Monday)
Wigan v Aston Villa

Of course  if you are really cold, you should be wearing your teams hats scarves and gloves from www.footballbits.co.uk

As so often, the final word goes to Arsenal manager, Arsene Wenger: “Nobody acepts any risk any more and everybody is guided by fear”, “If one person out of 60,000 has an accident, you feel guilty. That is why the games are postponed when there is no real need for it”
