World Cup 2010 Day Eighteen

World CupMonday 28th June – Day 18
The favourites are through

Holland 2 Slovakia 1
A great goal from Arjen Robben and a late Wesley Sneijder second gave Holland a deserved win over Slovakia and reach the quarter-finals.
In his first start of the competition, Robben fired in a superb low drive from 25 yards. Sneijder sealed the game for the Dutch and then Robert Vittek scored a consolation penalty for Slovakia with the very last kick of the game.

Brazil 3 Chile 0
Brazil strolled past a disappointing Chile to set up a quarter-final match against Holland. Juan scored first with a powerful header, Luis Fabiano slotted into an empty net for the second and then Robinho got his first goal of the tournament from the edge of the area.

Got a feeling its all set up for an Argentina v Brazil final, how good would that be!!

The Last Sixteen

World CupFriday 25th June – Day 15
So now we know who the last 16 are, and there’s a couple of mouth watering matches to look out for, as some old enemies meet up.

Firstly England meet Germany and what needs to be said about that meeting? Lets hope there’s a replay of the fine 5-1 win in Munich back in 2001

And then there’s the meeting between neighbours Portugal and Spain, both sides full of class and so looks like being a very entertaining game

The Last 16 draw in full:

Uruguay v South Korea
United States v Ghana
Germany v England
Argentina v Mexico
Holland v Slovakia
Brazil v Chile
Paraguay v Japan
Spain v Portugal

World CupThursday 24th June – Day 14

Paraguay booked their place in the knockout round after an uneventful draw against New Zealand ensured they finished top of Group F. Before the game the All Whites still had a chance of qualifying but blew their chances by not getting a single shot on target

Reigning champions Italy were amazingly knocked out of the World Cup by Slovakia. In what was probably the best game of the tournament so far, Robert Vittek scored a goal in each half to end the Azzurri’s dreams of defending the trophy they won in Germany.
The 2010 World Cup will be remembered as a disaster for Italy, who finished bottom group F and failed to qualify from the group stages for the first time since 1974.

Two stunning first-half free-kicks helped Japan secure a deserved win over Denmark and a meeting with Paraguay in the last 16. Keisuke Honda smashed his shot into the far corner before Yasuhito Endo, curled a fine strike around the wall.
Jon Dahl Tomasson followed up his own penalty to pull one back for Denmark, but Shinji Okazaki sealed a famous victory for Japan.

A late Klaas-Jan Huntelaar’s goal amde sure Holland moved into the last sixteen unbeaten. The Dutch had a harder job than they expected against a spirited Cameroon side, who were already eliminated after losing their first two matches.

No red cards today!!!

Group E
Denmark 1 Japan 3
Cameroon 1 Holland 2

Group F
Paraguay 0 New Zealand 0
Slovakia 3 Italy 2

Group EF

If it ended now..

2 games have been played in each group of the 2010 World Cup, so I was wondering if the group stages was only 2 games – who would play who in the 1st knock out round

Well wonder no more!

If the groups ended now, this is what the knock out stage would look like:

Uruguay v South Korea
Slovenia v Germany
Ghana v USA
Argentina v Mexico
Holland v Italy
Brazil v Spain
Paraguay v Japan
Chile v Portugal

Yep, no France, no South Africa, no Ivory Coast and worst of all – No England!!!

Thankfully there’s still one game left

World CupSaturday 19th June – Day 9

Holland  put themselves on the brink of qualification for the last 16 with a hard-fought win over a stubborn Japan side. Wesley Sneijder’s 52nd-minute shot from just outside the penalty box settled the game between two very different sides and which really opened up in the second half.

The Socceroo’s overcame the first half sending off of Harry Kewell to draw with Ghana and that keeps their slim hopes of reaching the World Cup second round alive. Australia, soundly beaten 4-0 by Germany in their opening game, took an early lead through Brett Holman before former Liverpool forward Kewell was shown a straight red for a handball on the goal-line and Asamoah Gyan slotted home his second penalty of the tournament to equalise.

Denmark came from behind to beat Cameroon in a thrilling game that ensures the African team became the first to be knocked out. Denmark have qualified from the group stage at all three previous World Cup appearances and will face Japan in their final game knowing a win will will see them through the next round.
The result also ensured that Holland will qualify from Group E.

And yes that’s right, yet another red card..

Group E
Holland 1 Japan 0
Cameroon 1 Denmark 2

Group D
Ghana 1 Australia 1
